Champion of Champions.
It has a nice ring to it. Throughout my career I’ve had the pleasure of playing with and against some of the best players in the world: Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Kasey Keller. My final match in Rave Green was battling against John Terry.
But our goal was always to play against these international icons with something more on the line. And the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League provides this opportunity.
Sigi Schmid is the only MLS coach to win the Champions League in 2000. Since then, our friends in Salt Lake and Montreal have come the closest, but Humberto Suazo crushed the dreams of the Claret and Cobalt, and Club America said, “Je Suis Desole.” But Sounders FC is here to make history.
From day one of this season, Sounders FC has been preparing for this opportunity by scheduling its international friendly against Club Tijuana in March. With our backs against the wall after a tough July and a goal down in Vancouver last week, our character shined through with a fantastic away point. The journey continues on August 19th vs. CD Olimpia.
While the CONCACAF Champions League provides an opportunity to showcase our talent on the field, my goal is to inspire our passionate fan-base and the global power of soccer to increase our reach in the community. In close partnership with Seattle International Foundation, I will be headed to Tegucigalpa, Honduras to join forces with USAID and Creative Associates International to support their Youth Alliance Program - a regional network of community-run, youth centers dedicated to reducing violence, creating safe spaces and generating opportunity for learning, recreation and job training.
