If you marched to CenturyLink Field on Saturday, you may have noticed something a little out of the ordinary. Washington Global Health Alliance hosted its first-ever Water Carry from Occidental Park to the organization’s booth on the North Plaza at Soccer Celebration.
The Water Carry was organized to bring awareness to the plight of many in Africa, especially young women, who travel by foot for long distances to gather water that is often unsafe to consume. WGHA has teamed up with Sounders FC for the upcoming Rave Green Run, presented by EvergreenHealth. Part of the run’s proceeds will benefit WGHA’s efforts in Tanzania. "Last Saturday’s March to the Match Water Carry kicked off a much anticipated clean water project that will ultimately improve the health and livelihoods of families in rural Tanzania," said Roger Levesque, Director of Community for Sounders FC.
“We’re grateful to Sounders FC and the best fans in Major League Soccer for drawing attention to one of the world’s greatest inequities — inaccessible clean water and its disproportionate impact on women and girls,” said Lisa Cohen, Executive Director of Washington Global Health Alliance. “As the ‘Water, Wealth and Health’ project kicks off it will not only increase access to clean water in Tanzania it will provide a platform for economic empowerment.”
