On the latest installment of Winging it with Zak and Brad, club legends Steve Zakuani and Brad Evans open up the episode by discussing the killing of George Floyd and the ensuing protests, institutional racism, police brutality, and the somber history of racism and inequality in the United States.
“I think it’s something we have to come to grips with, come to terms with and try to understand,” said Zakuani. “I think most of us are logical and reasonable, and can agree that there’s a problem.”
In light of the current historical moment, the pair discuss the range of emotions – grief, anger, frustration, and hope – that they’ve experienced as they’ve watched events unfold across the nation and world these past ten days.
“The thing that gives me hope is the majority of the world appears to understand and be reasonable,” said Zakuani. “It’s not black vs. white. It’s people against racism to say ‘enough is enough’. These injustices can’t continue. People shouldn’t live like that. We should live in equality.”
Later in the episode, the Zak and Brad are joined by Colorado Rapids forward Kei Kamara to discuss his perspective on the past week, MLS returning to play, and his illustrious career.
Finally, the episode wraps up with midfielder Harry Shipp, who serves as Sounders FC’s Players Union Rep, discussing the steps taken to resume soccer and the team’s eagerness to get back out on the pitch.
