TUKWILA, WASH. – Tacoma Defiance (1-0-0, 3 points) defeated Real Monarchs (0-1-0, 0 points) 4-0 at Starfire Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez recorded a brace with Dylan Teves and Samuel Adeniran adding goals as Tacoma kicked off its inaugural MLS NEXT Pro season.
In a match that featured eight Sounders FC First Team players, Ocampo-Chavez provided the first goal of the match in the 40th minute when Teves put a cross into the area for a deflected header off the goalkeeper’s glove and into the back of the net. It was the striker’s first goal for the club after going on loan to Austrian side Pinzgau Saalfelden last year.
Teves doubled the lead for the home side in the 49th minute after Reed Baker-Whiting maneuvered through the area and slid a ball to the University of Washington product, who was able to finish it from close range. Ocampo-Chavez completed his brace in the 86th minute, when Randy Mendoza sent a cross in from the left flank that found the head of the Merced, California native, who made the score 3-0. Adeniran, who led Defiance with 13 goals in 2021, finished off a one-on-one effort in the 92nd minute to cap off the 4-0. Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland kept a clean sheet, making four saves throughout the match.
