Six years ago this week, Sounders FC debuted as an MLS club. Many current supporters can remember the excitement of that first match at CenturyLink Field with more than 30,000 cheering on the Rave Green.
This week, there’s another chance to be a part of the arrival of a new team.
Sounders FC 2 — S2 for short — kicks off its first year in USL this Saturday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The team has been busy preparing since January, with the final roster really taking shape this past week. With just days to go before the squad begins its first season, we’re taking a look at the top five reasons why you won’t want to miss Saturday night’s match.
5) The future is now: Remember how exciting it was to watch Homegrown Player DeAndre Yedlin progress through his career? S2 provides the opportunity for young, talented players to get in front of both supporters and competitive teams each week. S2 fits into the Sounders philosophy of building a full soccer club, all the way from the Academy up to the First Team.
4) Big competition: S2 kicks off its inaugural campaign by taking on the reigning USL champion from last season, Sacramento Republic FC. With a title to defend, Sac Republic will be primed to set the level of play high against the home team.
3) The only show in town: Sure, the First Team is on a bye week, but that doesn’t mean there’s not some Saturday Night Soccer in the Seattle area. S2 means there are more matches to watch this season and more chances to see your favorite players take to the pitch. Don’t attend matches regularly at CenturyLink? 2) Get close to the action: At Starfire Stadium, supporters will enjoy a close-up look at the action just as they do during Sounders FC Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches. There’s not a bad seat in the house, and there are plenty of opportunities to get even closer to the pitch, with pitch-side tables and VIP experiences available for every home match.
1) It’s all about you: S2 is supporter-owned, thanks to the Sounders Community Trust. The Trust is a charitable, fan and supporter-managed non-profit that holds a 20 percent interest in the club. Founders Club memberships are still available, as are tickets for this weekend’s inaugural match.
