How they qualified: As one of the most consistent performers in the UEFA Champions League from 2020-24, Atlético qualified via the ranking pathway
Players to know:
Alexander Sørloth: The hulking Norwegian international center forward joined Atléti from fellow Spanish side Villarreal last summer and immediately hit the ground running. His 20 goals led the team and was good for fourth in La Liga, behind only household names Kylian Mbappé and Robert Lewandowski as well as Osasuna forward Ante Budimir.
Julián Álvarez: The other piece of Atlético’s two-headed attacking monster is the Argentine international who finished with 17 goals and four assists in just over 2,500 minutes. Álvarez joined Atlético last summer as well from Manchester City in a massive deal worth up to more than $100M.
Antoine Griezmann: Though he’s slowed down a little bit as he’s hit his mid-30s, Griezmann is still one of the greatest strikers of his generation. The French international and FIFA World Cup winner is Atlético’s all-time leading goalscorer.
