Clint Dempsey’s goal helps United States draw Panama 1-1 on the road in World Cup Qualifying

The United States and Panama played to a 1-1 draw in Panama City on Tuesday on Matchday 4 of the Hexagonal in CONCACAF 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.

Sounders forward Clint Dempsey opened the scoring in the 39th minute off a brilliant piece of attacking skill from Christian Pulisic. The goal was Dempsey’s fourth in his last two WCQ matches and now sits at 56 career international tallies, just one behind Landon Donovan’s all-time U.S. men’s record.

Los Canaleros leveled the match just four minutes after Dempsey struck when Gabriel Gomez hammered home from close range after a long throw-in in the box.

Dempsey and Sounders teammate and Panamanian defender Roman Torres also exchanged words in the first half after a Panamanian defender fouled Pulisic hard.

The United States currently sit in fourth place in the Hex with four points. Panama are third with five points.

The U.S.’ next two Hex matches will come on June 8 at home to Trinidad and Tobago followed by a June 11 road match with Mexico. Panama will visit Costa Rica on June 9 before hosting Honduras on June 13.
