The National Soccer Hall of Fame announced on Sunday that former Seattle Sounders and United States Men’s National team legend Clint Dempsey had been voted in with the class of 2022. Alongside fellow icons of the American game like Shannon Boxx, Marco Etcheverry, Hope Solo, Linda Hamilton and Esse Baharmast, Dempsey will be inducted during a ceremony at the NSHOF in Frisco, Texas, on May 21.
Arguably the greatest player in the history of the USMNT, Dempsey burst onto the scene with the New England Revolution from 2004-06 before making a jump across the pond to play with Fulham. Known for his unique blend of creative flair and ruthless efficiency in the final third, Dempsey became something of a living legend during his time at Craven Cottage before earning a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Back in 2013, Dempsey decided to come home. The all-time leading scorer for the Stars & Stripes signed with the Seattle Sounders on August 3. Dempsey’s time in Rave Green was nothing short of remarkable, as he led the club to a Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup double in 2014 and was a member of the 2016 squad that lifted the first club’s first MLS Cup. The Texas native finished his tenure in the Pacific Northwest with 53 goals and 29 assists across the MLS regular season and playoffs.
