Evans assists on game-winning goal as USA defeats World Cup champion Germany

USA-Germany Celebration 150610

Sounders FC captain Brad Evans recorded the game-winning assist on Wednesday as the U.S. Men’s National Team won 2-1 over Germany, the No. 1 ranked team in the world.

After coming on as a substitute at halftime, Evans received the ball from Michael Bradley in the 87th minute and played it up the pitch to Bobby Wood. The young forward turned toward the goal and fired a shot into the bottom corner, breaking the 1-1 tie and giving the USMNT its second straight win over one of the highest-ranked teams on the planet.

Also involved on the play was Sounders FC Academy product Jordan Morris, who dummied the pass through to Wood and helped create space for the finish.

Evans earned his 19th cap in the match, helping the USA keep Germany off the scoreboard during his 45 minutes of action in the second half. He played right back and made a number of key tackles late in the game.

Germany's starting lineup featured many of its players from the World Cup-winning squad, including Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze, the scorer of Die Mannschaft’s lone goal.

The victory improved the USA’s record in 2015 to 4-2-1. Last week, the Americans defeated the Netherlands for the very first time by virtue of a 4-3 win in Amsterdam.

In addition to making his 19th appearance on Wednesday, Evans was named to the USMNT preliminary roster for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Also on the team is Sounders forward Clint Dempsey, former Homegrown Player DeAndre Yedlin and Morris.

Before the Gold Cup starts, the USMNT will play a friendly on July 3 against Guatemala, a match that could feature a battle between Marco Pappa and Sounders teammates Dempsey and Evans.
