SEATTLE, WASH. – The 15 groups were today announced for Leagues Cup 2023, with Sounders FC placed the West 2 group alongside Real Salt Lake and CF Monterrey of Liga MX. Dates and times for Group Stage matches, as well as further scheduling details on Leagues Cup 2023, will be announced at a later date.
The clubs in each group for Leagues Cup 2023 are based on geography, competitive balance and 2022 Supporters Shield standings.
Leagues Cup 2023 is a complete reimagining of the tournament, with all clubs from MLS and Liga MX participating in the official Concacaf-sanctioned tournament from July 21 – August 19. The tournament will consist of 77 total matches in a World Cup-style tournament, with Group Stage play followed by Knockout Rounds. During the last Leagues Cup tournament in 2021, the Rave Green fell 3-2 in the Final to Club Léon at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Every team plays two matches in the Group Stage, with the top two teams from each group, as determined by points, advancing to the Knockout Stage Round of 32. No matches in the Leagues Cup Group Stage will end in a tie. If a game is tied after 90 minutes, the game proceeds to a penalty shootout. Fans around the world are able to watch Leagues Cup on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app (excluding viewers in Mexico), which is available on Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices from Roku, Amazon, and Google, game consoles and the web at tv.apple.com. TelevisaUnivision, FOX Sports, TSN and RDS are the linear broadcast home for select Leagues Cup matches. The Leagues Cup Final will be available on Univision in Spanish.
Sounders FC continues its preseason preparations, leaving for Marbella, Spain on January 21 for a week of training before traveling to Morocco to play in the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup. The Rave Green play either Auckland City or Al Ahly SC on February 4 at 9:30 a.m. PT in Tangier, Morocco, with the winner of that match advancing to play Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid on February 8 at 11:00 a.m. PT in Rabat, Morocco. Seattle’s MLS regular season campaign kicks off on February 26 against the Colorado Rapids at 5:00 p.m. PT on the Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Lumen Field.
