Jordan Morris’ brace leads United States past Martinique in 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup

Jordan Morris scored twice on Wednesday evening to propel the United States past Martinique in what was a Seattle Sounders-filled second group stage match of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Morris and Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan each started for the United States — Roldan earned his first USMNT cap — while defender Jordy Delem and former Sounder Kevin Parsemain started for Martinique. Morris, Roldan and Delem each went the full 90 minutes.

The U.S. and Martinique were scoreless in the second half until defender Omar Gonzalez put the Americans in front with a goal off a rebound in the 53rd minute.

Morris scored his first of the night in 64th minute off a deft left-footed flick off a cross from Eric Lichaj. Martinique would answer almost immediately as Parsemain’s shot from distance beat Brad Guzan in the 66th minute.

Martinique equalized less than 10 minutes later when Parsemain redirected a shot from Johan Audel.

Morris provided the heroics for the U.S. as he completed his brace in the 76th minute. He entered with two international goals in 17 caps and doubled his total on Wednesday.

CONCACAF named Morris the Man of the Match, and he became the second-youngest U.S. national team player to score two goals in a Gold Cup game.

The U.S. are currently first place in Group B with four points and will take on Nicaragua in the final group stage match on Saturday, July 15 at 4 p.m. PT at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
