Major League Soccer on Thursday released the 2027 Sprint Season schedule, giving fans a glimpse of what will be a historic year for North American soccer. As MLS transitions to a FIFA-aligned calendar running from August to May, 2027 will feature a one-of-a-kind Sprint Season from February to May to bridge the gap.
A condensed schedule with a shot at MLS Cup glory at the end, the Sprint Season is shaping up to be a can’t-miss competition. Here are four takeaways from Sounders FC’s schedule release:
Every Point Matters
The stakes have never been higher. With only 14 matches on the calendar, every result means more during the Sprint Season. There’s no margin for error as Sounders FC go head-to-head with Western Conference opponents in their battle for a third MLS Cup title.
It’s nonstop action, and every match is a six-pointer.
Home Opener with History
Dating back to 2009, the Sounders and Real Salt Lake have produced some unforgettable battles in league play. In their most recent meeting, Danny Musovski and Albert Rusnák powered the Rave Green with a pair of long-range blasts in a 2-0 win at Lumen Field.
The Sounders have been unbeaten against RSL at Lumen Field since 2023, posting three wins and a draw. Expect plenty of fireworks in the Home Opener as the Rave Green look to hit the ground running in the Sprint Season.
Rivalry at Home
With teams playing each other only once during the Sprint Season, there was no guarantee that some of the most anticipated matchups of the year would take place at home. But as fate would have it, the Sounders will host their rivals, the Portland Timbers, under the arches at Lumen Field on April 3.
In a year where every result can be the difference between an MLS Cup run and missing the postseason, this promises to be one of the most electric editions of the Cascadia rivalry in recent years.
High-Profile Homestand
Right on the heels of the Portland match, the Sounders will host another high-profile opponent in LAFC on April 7.
Some of the most unforgettable matches in club history have come against the Black & Gold, including several playoff wins. As recently as 2025, the Sounders delivered one of the most explosive performances in club history, routing LAFC 5-2 at Lumen Field.
Suffice it to say, the first week of April is shaping up to be one of the best weeks of soccer next year.
Rave On
Every night at Lumen Field is a chance to show up for the Rave Green and for each other. And starting with the 2027 Sprint Season, gates at Lumen Field will open 90 minutes before kickoff, giving fans more time to experience matchday.
