Seattle Sounders FC 2 cannot stop scoring in the final 10 minutes of big matches.
Despite falling behind twice in the match and going down a man early in the second half, S2 earned a massive road point against a tough opponent in a 2-2 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Monday in Langley, B.C. Midfielder Jordan Schweitzer scored both goals for S2, the final of which came in the 81st minute to secure the point.
Schweitzer's heroics game just three days after S2 grabbed a stunning late victory over Vancouver at home on Friday night. Sunday's draw marked the third straight game that S2 scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of the match as the team continues to battle its way into playoff contention.
Vancouver struck early in both halves, the first of their goals coming in the 3rd minute when midfielder Marco Bustos blasted a short range rocket into the left corner leaving goalkeeper Tyler Miller with no chance for the save. S2 came roaring back with a couple of opportunities from forward Irvin Parra and the eventual equalizer from Schweitzer in the 21st minute coming off of some brilliant one-touch soccer from head coach Ezra Hendrickson’s side.
The second half began in much of the same fashion, with the 'Caps striking early on a penalty in the 48th minute by Bustos. Things then went from bad to worse as midfielder Zach Mathers saw a straight red card in the 51st minute, leaving S2 to play a large portion of the match down to ten.
That didn’t stop S2, however, as they hit a late goal in the 81st minute when forward Victor Mansaray lost his defender along the left flank and played in a cross to Schweitzer, who met the ball with his head for the final equalizer.
With Sunday's result, S2 now sit only one point under the red line with three matches to go. Next up for S2 is Oklahoma City Energy FC on Sunday, Sept. 11 (4 p.m. PT, live stream on SoundersFC.com) after the Energy lost 4-0 to Portland Timbers 2 on Sunday.
