MATCH RECAP: S2 falls on the road at Rio Grande Valley FC Toros

Nick Hinds September 2018

EDINBURG, TEXAS – Sounders FC 2 (5-19-5, 20 points) on Saturday fell on the road at Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (6-11-13, 31 points) at H-E-B Park, 3-0. Todd Wharton recorded a goal and an assist for the hosts as they extended their unbeaten streak to three games. The teams split the season series, as S2 won the first meeting between the clubs on April 14 in Tacoma.

Rio Grande Valley FC jumped out to a quick lead on a goal from Todd Wharton in the fifth minute. He took a pass from Carlos Small and hit a strike from outside the box past S2 goalkeeper Calle Brown. In the 41st minute, Eric Bird made a great solo effort inside the area and finished to the right side of the goal with his left foot to give the home side a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The third and final marker of the night came in the 76th minute off a corner kick. Wharton’s corner found the head of Nicolas Perea who finished past an outstretched Brown. With a goal and an assist tonight, Wharton now ranks third on the team in goals scored (4) and tied for second in assists (3).

S2 saw two appearances from First Team players in Brown and Tony Alfaro, while there were no Sounders Academy players that saw action for Seattle.

Sounders FC 2 returns to action on Saturday, September 29 at San Antonio FC. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PT and the match will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
