MATCH RECAP: Sounders FC Plays to Scoreless Draw With Portland in First Preseason Match of 2022

MAF04114

TUCSON, ARIZ. – Kicking off 2022 preseason action, Sounders FC drew 0-0 with Cascadia rival Portland Timbers Wednesday evening at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona. It was the first competitive match of the year for Seattle, who traveled to Tucson on Sunday for its first trip of the preseason.

Seattle had numerous chances at goal, the first coming midway through the first half when a cross that came in from the left side nearly found the feet of a sliding Dylan Teves. Albert Rusnák’s cross in the 59th minute was able to find the head of Kelyn Rowe, who put a shot on frame into the hands of the Timbers goalkeeper. Seattle’s best chance of the night came in the 72nd minute when Sam Adeniran ran down the right flank and crossed a ball into the area that was deflected twice in front of the Portland goal before being cleared.

With the exception of Will Bruin coming on for Raúl Ruidíaz at halftime, Seattle subbed out its entire lineup in the 62nd minute, putting in a number of 2021 Tacoma Defiance players, Sounders Academy players and unsigned draft picks who are with the club in Tucson.

Brian Schmetzer’s side continues preseason training in the desert for another six days, taking on the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, February 1 in another friendly. The team then heads home to Seattle for a week before departing for its second preseason trip in Palm Springs on February 8.
