Nicolás Lodeiro to miss Seattle Sounders’ second CCL quarterfinal leg against Chivas with midfoot sprain

When the Seattle Sounders take on Chivas at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Wednesday (7 p.m. PT, go90.com, Univision Deportes, 950 KJR AM) in the return leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series, they will do so without star Designated Player Nicolás Lodeiro.

Lodeiro was diagnosed with a right midfoot sprain, which is an injury to a tendon between metatarsal bones. It is not expected to be long term.

The 28-year-old Uruguayan, who has two goals and two assists through three 2018 CCL matches, underwent a bone scan in Seattle prior to the team departing for Mexico. The team doctors and staff ultimately decided to not bring Lodeiro.

“We thought it might have been a stress fracture,” Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer toldThe Seattle Times. “But we had a bone scan and found out that it wasn’t. But it’s still inflamed enough that he didn’t make the trip.”

The Sounders enter Wednesday sporting a 1-0 aggregate lead thanks to a win at CenturyLink Field last week.
