The Seattle Sounders drew the Colorado Rapids 3-3 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., on Saturday evening in a match that was delayed an hour due to inclement weather. A Morgan Whittaker brace and a Donavan Phillip goal paced the hosts in a back-and-forth affair, while Cristian Roldan, Dejan Joveljić and Caden Clark tallied for Seattle.
Whittaker had a good look inside seven minutes when he went 1-v-1 on the right side of the box, but his shot was saved at the near post by Andrew Thomas.
Jordan Morris came close to opening the scoring for the Sounders in the 18th minute when Joveljić clipped a ball to the far post. Morris rose and headed the cross whence it came, but it ricocheted off the post and stayed out.
The Rapids took the lead in the 28th minute when Paxten Aaronson curled a ball into the box from the left flank, and Whittaker calmly redirected it on a volley into the far corner.
Joveljić had a half-chance in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, but his left-footed effort was cleaned up by goalkeeper Nico Hansen.
The Sounders came out strongly to start the second half and capitalized in the 49th minute when Roldan flicked on an Albert Rusnák free kick to level the score.
The Rapids retook the lead seven minutes later when Phillip cleaned up a reaction save from Thomas on the doorstep after a Whittaker corner kick.
Colorado was inches away from adding a third in the 58th minute when Sayed Abu Farki’s header at the far post rattled the crossbar.
The Rapids grabbed their third in the 76th minute when Aaronson found Whittaker again, this time on the right side, and Whittaker took a touch before striking the ball on a half-volley into the top part of the goal.
The Sounders thought they had grabbed a second goal two minutes later when Joveljić found the back of the net, but it was disallowed for offside.
Joveljić wasted no time finding redemption, striking an absolute beauty from outside the box one minute later that picked out the top corner and cut the deficit to one.
Sebastian Gomez danced inside the box in the 85th minute to create room to fire a shot, but Hansen did well to get big and deflect it out for a corner.
A late substitute, Clark came off the bench for instant impact, unleashing a shot from outside the box in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to rescue a point.
Seattle is unbeaten in its last five matches, notching five consecutive draws.
The Sounders finish the match 14th in the Western Conference with 29 points from 24 matches (7-9-8). Seattle sits four points outside the West’s final postseason position with two matches in hand.
