RECAP: Sounders nearly grab three points, but late Galaxy goal leads to draw

The Seattle Sounders drew the LA Galaxy 2-2 at Lumen Field on Saturday evening. Seattle jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Jesús Ferreira and Danny Musovski before the Galaxy clawed back with goals from Maya Yoshida and Miki Yamane to split the points.

The Sounders needed just five minutes to find the opener when Alex Roldan played a beautiful ball in behind for Musovksi, who was one-on-one with his defender. Musovski picked his head up before calmly dropping a pass to the penalty spot for an onrushing Ferreira to fire home with a first-time finish to the bottom corner.

The Galaxy forced Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei to push the ball over his crossbar in the 30th minute when Edwin Cerrillo unleashed a one-timed effort from the top of the box off a feed from Diego Fagundez.

The Sounders nearly found a second goal off a counterattack in the 35th minute when Reed Baker-Whiting whipped in a ball for Paul Rothrock, who took the ball of his chest and sent a left-footed shot on goal that Galaxy goalkeeper Novak Mićović kicked away.

Mićović made another brilliant one-on-one stop on Musovski two minutes later after Musovski had broken through the center of the LA defense and looked to pick out the far post.

Musovski found his goal in the 41st minute after a wonderful bit of attacking play in the final third. Obed Vargas slipped in Rothrock on the left side of the box, and the Seattle native played a simple ball across the face of goal for Musovski to redirect into the net.

The Galaxy pulled a goal back three minutes later when Fagundez clipped a cross from the left side of the box to Yoshida at the far post, and the former Japanese international headed home.

Ferreira forced Mićović to parry a free kick over the crossbar in the second minute of first-half stoppage time after his dangerous ball was threatening to find the top corner.

Rothrock headed in a goal in the 51st minute after a short corner kick, but the goal was waved off for offside.

Frei got down quickly to his right in the 58th minute to push away an attempt from Elijah Wynder from just outside the box.

Mićović kept the Galaxy in the game in the 78th minute with another big stop, this time on Alex Roldan, who had beaten his man to a switched ball and maneuvered his way inside the box.

Georgi Minoungou was inches away from a highlight-reel goal in the 81st minute when Ferreira crossed a ball to the center of the box for the Burkinabé international, whose bicycle kick attempt just sailed over the bar.

The Galaxy found an equalizer against the run of play in the 87th minute when Yamane cleaned up a loose ball in the box.

Mićović made a huge save two minutes later when Nouhou had an attempt on a half-volley from the left side of the box that the Serbian goalkeeper deflected out for a corner.

Jordan Morris, who came on as a second-half substitute, had a header from the center of the box in the first minute of stoppage time, but it was right at Mićović.

The Sounders finish the match in fourth place in the Western Conference with 45 points from 28 matches (12-7-9).

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Musovski nearing history

Musovski tallied his 14th goal of the MLS regular season on Saturday. He’s now just three goals behind Obafemi Martins (2014) and Raúl Ruidíaz (2021) for the most goals in Seattle’s domestic campaign with six matches remaining.

Rusnák, Morris return

The Sounders Designated Player duo returned after extended injury absences. Albert Rusnák missed the last five weeks with a hamstring injury, while Morris made his first appearance since July 19 after having surgery to repair the AC joint in his shoulder. Rusnák is having another fantastic season in Rave Green with 10 goals and seven assists, both second on the team, while Morris has four goals in just a little over 400 minutes this year.

Leagues Cup Final rematch awaits

The Sounders have a quick turnaround when they head cross-country to take on Inter Miami in Florida on Tuesday in a rematch of the Leagues Cup Final that Seattle won 3-0 at Lumen Field on Aug. 31.
