RECAP: Sounders overturn two-goal deficit in wild 3-3 draw at LA Galaxy

OVHD2174

The Seattle Sounders drew the LA Galaxy 3-3 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., on Friday night. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández and Víctor Vázquez scored for the Galaxy in the first half before Kelyn Rowe, Raúl Ruidíaz and Jordan Morris scored three unanswered in the second half. Dejan Joveljić equalized from the penalty spot in the second minute of stoppage time to salvage a late draw for LA.

Chicharito opened the scoring for the hosts 10 minutes in when he received a pass from Kévin Cabral and slotted a shot to the far post past Stefan Frei.

The Sounders thought they had equalized six minutes later when Morris’ header found the back of the net, but he was whistled offside.

Vázquez doubled the Galaxy’s advantage in the 42nd minute when his shot from distance found the top far corner.

Rowe halved the deficit in the 53rd minute when he one-timed a shot off a great run and feed from Ruidíaz.

The Peruvian leveled the contest on a wild sequence in the 61st minute when he headed home a cross from Nicolás Lodeiro. The goal came after Albert Rusnák pinged the crossbar from distance before hitting the post in quick succession afterward.

Morris gave the Sounders the lead in the 73rd minute when he cleaned up a rebound from goalkeeper Jonathan Bond, who kept out a close-range header from Yeimar.

The Galaxy equalized in the second minute of stoppage time after the referee went to Video Review and awarded a penalty to LA for a handball on Xavier Arreaga. Joveljić stepped up and scored his 10th goal of the season.

Friday’s result snapped a four-match road losing streak and comes at a great time, as the Sounders prepare for two more games away from home to finish August. Seattle will travel south to take on the rival Portland Timbers next Friday night (7 p.m. PT; ESPN, ESPN Deportes, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360AM).

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Resilient comeback

Despite an unfortunate ending, the Sounders showed incredible resolve to fight back from two goals down and take the lead before ultimately leaving with a point. Seattle jumps back into the playoff picture in seventh place on 33 points.

Ruidíaz strikes again vs. LA

Ruidíaz loves a big game and especially one against the Galaxy. The Sounders’ talisman now has nine goals in nine career appearances against LA.

Roldan injury to watch

Cristian Roldan was a big absence for the Sounders on Friday. The veteran midfielder was left out due to a left athletic pubalgia, but the injury isn’t expected to be long term.
