The Seattle Sounders closed out their midweek match against the San Jose Earthquakes with three points at home following a 3-2 win on Wednesday night. Albert Rusnák, Jesús Ferreira and Osaze De Rosario scored for the Sounders side while Nick Fernandez and Preston Judd tallied for the visitors.

San Jose got on the scoresheet early, when an attempted pass back to goalkeeper Andrew Thomas was intercepted by Nonso Adimabua inside the eighteen-yard-box. From there, the forward laid the ball back to San Jose midfielder Nick Fernandez, who finished first-time in the second minute of the match.

The Sounders nearly leveled the score three minutes later with a Snyder Brunell strike from the center of the box, but it was saved by goalkeeper Daniel De Sousa Britto.

In the 18th minute, San Jose’s Jack Jasinski found his teammate Jack Skahan down the right flank, leading to another shot opportunity for the away side. Thomas shut it down quickly with a near post save, preventing the potential goal.

Kalani Kossa-Rienzi was inches away from knocking one in when he dribbled to open space and attempted a shot from the middle of the box in the 21st minute. The powerful strike deflected off a San Jose defender and looked as if it was headed toward the lower right corner of the net, but it hit the post instead.

In the 32nd minute, Jackson Ragen had a chance at goal with a redirected header off a Rusnák corner kick, but it went wide-left of the goal.

Six minutes later, Ferreira laid the ball back to Brunell, setting him up to finish one-time. A De Sousa Britto diving effort, however, denied the goal.

The Sounders finally got on the scoresheet in the 42nd minute after a handball from the visitors earned them a penalty opportunity. Rusnák blasted it down the middle of the goal, tying up the score just before the half.

Seattle continued their scoring in the opening 10 minutes of the second half with a spectacular one-man performance from Ferreira in the 55th minute. After intercepting a San Jose pass in Seattle’s defensive half, the winger dribbled all the way to the other side of the field where he utilized some crafty moves to get by San Jose’s defense and tally the Sounders second goal of the night.

San Jose responded in the 69th minute with a second goal of their own from their leading goal-scorer Preston Judd. The attacking player found the ball in the center of the eighteen where he rocketed a shot into the left corner of the net.

The Sounders almost regained the lead in the 76th minute when Ferreira found Jordan Morris on a through ball into the box, but his close range shot was blocked by De Sousa Britto.

Both sides had opportunities to come away with a win in the remaining minutes of the match, but it was the Sounders who came out on top. Tied at 2-2 with one minute left in regulation, Nouhou provided a beautiful ball into the box to De Rosario, who headed it one-time past De Sousa Britto to win it for the Rave Green.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Unbeaten streak remains

Following tonight’s win over San Jose, the Sounders are now 22 unbeaten at home. Their last loss at Lumen Field took place on June 23, 2025 against Paris Saint Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ferreira on fire

Ferreira played a major role in the team’s offensive success on Wednesday night. Not only did he score arguably one of Seattle’s most exciting goals this season, he created the most chances (7), had the most touches (10) in the opposition’s box and took the joint-most shots (3).

Battled till the very end

It was a back and forth battle between the two sides throughout most of the match with the scoreline changing on multiple occasions. While it looked as if the match was going to end in a draw, Seattle fought till the very end to earn three points at home with De Rosario’s game-winning header in the 89th minute.

Heritage Cup winners

The Sounders were crowned Heritage Cup champs after defeating the 'Quakes 1-0 on March 15 at Paypal Park and taking them down once again on Wednesday night.
