CONCACAF Gold Cup

Seattle Sounders midfielder Jordy Delem starts, plays 90 minutes in Martinique's 4-0 loss to Canada

Seattle Sounders midfielder Jordy Delem and Martinique kicked off their Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with a 4-0 loss to Canada on Saturday in the group stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

Deployed as a central midfielder with the Sounders, the hard-nosed No. 6 played 90 minutes at center back for his country. Martinique arguably generated the better chances in the first half but conceded the opener in 33rd minute when John David picked the pocket of a midfielder and calmly finished in a 1-v-1 with the goalkeeper.

After the break, Canada kicked things up a gear, carving out a host of chances and likely would have scored even more if not for Delem. Martinique could only stem the tide for so long, as goals in the 53rd minute, 60th minute and 67th minute sealed the result.

Delem and Martinique continue Group A play with a match against Cuba on June 19 (5 p.m. PT; FS1).
