Just in time.
On the final day of the Secondary Transfer Window, the Seattle Sounders announced the acquisition of defender Brad Smith on loan from English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth. The 24-year-old has spent the past five seasons in England, originally with Liverpool and then at Bournemouth for the past two years.
“Combined with his background, Brad’s significant speed and versatility on the flanks make our team immediately better for the stretch run of the season,” General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey said. “We believe he can help our club continue its climb up the table and into the MLS Cup Playoffs.”

Smith moved from Penrith, Australia, to England as a teenager, then came up through the youth ranks with Liverpool. He made his First Team debut in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in December 2013.
After a year-long loan to Swindon Town in 2014-15, Smith made 10 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. He scored his first goal for Liverpool during FA Cup play in January 2016 before joining Bournemouth.
“When we became aware of Brad’s availability through our scouting network, it was a straightforward decision to bring him into our club,” said Sounders FC Vice President of Soccer & Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “Anytime you can add someone entering the prime of their career with the type of background Brad brings to the table, it’s only going to make your team stronger.”
Smith played for England at the youth level, including the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He is cap-tied with Australia, though, with whom he has 19 international appearances. He played in 12 matches for Australia in 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.
