BACK TO BUSINESS: Following a historic foray into the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, the Sounders return to their domestic season looking to ride the high of competing against some of the best players and teams in the world.

MORRIS RETURNS: An emotional buoy for Seattle came in the 87th minute of their last Group B group stage match against Paris Saint-Germain when Morris checked into the game for a cameo appearance. The 30-year-old Designated Player returned after being sidelined for more than two months while recovering from a hamstring injury.

ROLDAN ROLLING: Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan impressed on the world stage, not only proving he belongs but playing like one of the best players on the pitch in Seattle’s matches against Brazil’s Botafogo, Spain’s Atlético Madrid and France’s PSG.

FANS SHOWED OUT: The city of Seattle rallied around the Sounders during their FIFA Club World Cup journey, with more than 130,000 fans showing up to Lumen Field for the Sounders’ three matches.

AUSTIN RESTS UP: Austin had last weekend off like most of the rest of MLS teams while the FIFA Club World Cup got underway. Austin’s last match was a 2-1 home win over the New York Red Bulls on June 14.

SCORING WOES: Despite sitting in a playoff spot, Austin is tied for the fewest goals scored this season (CF Montréal) with just 15 through 19 matches. The Verde and Black are generating chances with 25 Expected Goals but are massively underperforming in front of goal.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Brandon Vazquez, F

The towering center forward has one third of his team’s total goals this season after joining from Mexico’s Monterrey in January for a then-club-record fee around $10M. The 26-year-old United States international spent one year in Mexico, scoring 14 goals in 49 matches for Rayados after joining from FC Cincinnati where he scored 43 goals and was a 2022 MLS Best XI performer.
