TWO-HEADED MONSTER: Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer has been experimenting with a 4-4-2 formation, a shift from his usual 4-2-3-1, since the arrival of forward Raúl RuidÃaz, and it has yielded tremendous results so far in its brief cameos.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD: Two of FC Dallas’ biggest midfield cogs have departed since the last time these two teams met in March. Playmaking No. 10 Mauro DÃaz left for the United Arab Emirates, while FCD sent Homegrown U.S. national teamer Kellyn Acosta to the Colorado Rapids in a trade for forward Dominique Badji.
RARE SLIP: FC Dallas is coming off its first home defeat of the season last weekend, a surprising 3-1 loss to the last-place San Jose Earthquakes.
ROLAND ALONG: FCD is led by midfielder Roland Lamah, who has eight goals and five assists on the season. He’s had to carry much of the offensive burden since the departure of Mauro DÃaz and is a big reason why Dallas has maintained its lead atop the West.
