With the first team seeking Cascadia Cup glory this weekend, their younger counterparts in the Academy got the job done against their regional rivals earlier this month. Two weeks ago, the Sounders FC Academy teams went 3-1-0 against archrivals Portland Timbers FC, winning the weekend handily. The four youth teams outscored their adversaries from the Rose City a combined 12-4, with only the U-18s suffering a loss.
The U-18s result must be taken with a grain of salt, as leftback Nicholas Hinds was in Serbia with the U.S. U-20 National Team. Their midfield engine room was further depleted in the absence of holding midfielder Lorenzo Ramos, who was called up to S2 for their match against the Austin Aztex. Furthermore, Sounders FC U-18 veteran Connor Noblat will be returning from injury as well. After two weeks of intense training the U-18 squad is poised for a breakout weekend in California.
Moving on Up
Midfielders Lorenzo Ramos and Handwalla Bwana were called up to S2 for last night’s regular season finale win over the Austin Aztex. With the win, the USL Pro newcomers clinched a playoff spot. On the Academy side, Ben Huynh and Dylan Teves will join four of their U-15 teammates in featuring for the U-16 squad in California this weekend.
One to Watch
Despite making the 18 for S2, Lorenzo Ramos will make his 2015-16 debut for the U18 academy. With Ramos operating from a deeper-lying role, both midfielders will seek to set the tempo in this weekend’s matches.
