Sounders FC 2 wins 2-1 on the road over Portland Timbers 2

PORTLAND, ORE. - Sounders FC 2 (9-13-2, 29 points) won its second Cascadia match in the span of a week with a 2-1 win over Portland Timbers 2 (2-18-3, 9 points) on Thursday evening at Providence Park. The win marks the third time this season that S2, who moved up to eighth place in the Western Conference, has defeated T2. Ezra Hendrickson's side returns to league play with a home fixture against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Wednesday, August 30 at Starfire Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).


After a scoreless first half, S2 took the lead in the 58th minute on a goal scored by Sam Rogers. Zach Mathers whipped in a free kick from the right side of the penalty are to the back post, where Rogers rose above his defender and scored with a powerful header. T2 pulled one back minutes later via a Jack Barmby corner kick that Bill Tuiloma for a header beyond the outstretched Tyler Miller and into the back of the net.


With the score level, both teams carved out a few quality chances in search of the decisive goal. In the 64th minute, T2 forward Augustine Williams hit a close-range header that forced S2 goalkeeper Tyler Miller into a diving save. S2 found the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute, courtesy of midfielder Henry Wingo. The Homegrown Player received the ball from Irvin Parra on the left side, drove past a pair of defenders and curled his shot from near the top corner of the 18-yard-box around T2 goalkeeper Wade Hamilton and into the side netting for his first professional goal.


The Rave Green return to action with a home contest against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Wednesday, August 30. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. PT from Starfire Stadium and is being live-streamed on SoundersFC.com.
