Brad Evans is headed to January camp after all.
U.S. Soccer announced Monday that the Sounders FC midfielder/defender has been added to the U.S. national team’s first camp of 2016, and that he will immediately begin training with Jurgen Klinsmann’s group in Carson, Calif.
Evans, 30, was initially passed over when Klinsmann put together a relatively young roster for the camp, as was fellow Sounder Clint Dempsey. Evans has not played for the USMNT since a substitute appearance during the CONCACAF Cup against Mexico in October.
Evans will miss the first week of preseason training with the Sounders and won’t join the team until the first week of February, at the earliest. The Sounders will open their preseason on Jan. 22 in Seattle before departing for Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 28.
Evans has 25 career international caps, including eight caps in 2015. He has one international goal – a stoppage-time winner at Jamaica on June 7, 2013, the latest match-winning goal in U.S. FIFA World Cup Qualifying history. Evans made four appearances for the USMNT at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The USMNT will host Iceland on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 12:45 p.m. PT (ESPN2, UniMas, UDN) before taking on CONCACAF rival Canada on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:15 p.m. PT (FS1, UniMas, UDN). Both matches are taking place at StubHub Center in Carson.
