Seattle selects defender Dylan Remick with 35th overall selection
RENTON, WASH. -
The Seattle Sounders FC selected Indiana University forward Eriq Zavaleta with its top pick (10
th
overall) and Brown University defender Dylan Remick (35
th
overall) in Thursday's Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Sounders FC traded its natural 16
th
pick in the first round and allocation money to Toronto FC in exchange for the 10
th
 overall selection.
"We're pleased and very excited to get both players," said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. "We had Eriq Zavaleta in the top four and we were excited to get him where we did. He is very versatile and has a good soccer IQ, and obviously he's a winner. Dylan Remick is a left back and he can also play center back. We liked him at our combine in Las Vegas. He's steady and simple and a very good athlete."
Zavaleta (Zah-va-let-uh), a 20-year-old Generation adidas forward from Indiana University, was named BIG-10 Offensive Player of the Year after scoring 18 goals in 2012, the third-most in the country. Zavaleta assisted on the game-winning goal in the College Cup final to help the Hoosiers win its eighth national championship. He started all 46 appearances in his two seasons at Indiana, scoring 28 career goals. Zavaleta was named to the College Soccer News First Team All-American, Soccer America MVP First Team, BIG-10 All-Tournament Team and the College Cup All-Tournament Team. He was also named a NSCAA Third Team All-American.
"I'm looking forward to playing for such an incredible team and such an awesome fan base," said Zavaleta. "The fan base in Seattle is unmatched by any MLS club and to be able to be a part of that is going to be an honor."
With its second pick (35
th
overall) Seattle selected Brown University defender Dylan Remick. Remick, a 21-year-old left-footed defender, was a First Team All-Ivy selection from 2010-12. He helped Brown qualify for the NCAA tournament three straight years, including two Sweet 16 appearances, and won the Ivy League title as a junior. Remick paced a Brown defense that tied team's all-time single-season record for shutouts (11) in each of three straight seasons (2010-12).
"It's an absolute honor and privilege to be a part of the Sounders organization," said Remick. "I am humbled and honored and I'm looking forward to continuing to improve on my position and skills with the Sounders organization."
Defender Andrew Farrell from the University of Louisville was chosen No. 1 overall by the New England Revolution after trading for the top pick with Toronto FC. Midfielder Fernando Monge, who played for the Sounders U23 team, was drafted 18

overall by Montreal Impact and University of Washington defender Dylan Tucker-Gangnes was selected 34

 overall by the Portland Timbers.
The MLS Supplemental Draft, consisting of four rounds, will be held via teleconference on Tuesday. Preseason training begins January 21 at the Starfire Sports in Tukwila, Wash.
All SuperDraft selections are expected to report to Seattle for preseason training. Sounders FC will begin its fifth MLS season by hosting the Montreal Impact on March 2 on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
