TUKWILA, Wash. — Seattle Sounders FC 2 conceded a second-half goal and couldn’t quite find one of their own, falling 1-0 to Tulsa Roughnecks FC in their Wednesday night matchup at Starfire Sports Complex.
Francisco Ugarte netted the game’s only goal in the 73rd minute for the visitors, while S2 couldn’t capitalize on any of the handful of chances they generated throughout the evening.
Neither side managed to break through in a back-and-forth first half, with Pasha Kondrakhin notching perhaps Tulsa’s best look of the first half off a free kick from a dangerous area just outside S2’s penalty box shortly after the opening kickoff. Kondrakhin’s shot made it past goalkeeper Bryan Meredith, but it deflected off the post and out for a corner kick.
Felix Chenkam had the best opportunity of the half for S2 off a nifty flicked shot from the top of the penalty area that made it past the outstretched arm of diving Tulsa goalkeeper Fabian Cerda. The shot deflected off the crossbar, though, narrowly denying Chenkam what would have been a highlight-reel tally.
Ugarte scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute off a corner kick from Juan Caffa and flicked the ball past Meredith and into net. Despite a late push for an equalizer, the hosts never found one against a stingy Tulsa backline.
S2 drops to 9-14-2 on the season, keeping them within four points of Oklahoma City Energy FC for the final playoff spot in the USL’s Western Conference. The club will look to bounce back in their next match against Didier Drogba and Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, Sept. 2.
