Match Recap

Unbeaten streak ends as Seattle Sounders fall 1-0 at Minnesota United

The Seattle Sounders suffered their first defeat of the 2021 MLS Regular Season, falling 1-0 to Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Sunday morning.

Seattle’s nine chances created and four shots on target could not find a breakthrough on the morning. Neither team did much in the first half to test opposing keepers. The best chance of the match for the Sounders came in the 75th minute when Xavier Arreaga found the back of the net through a header from a João Paulo free-kick, but the effort was disallowed from an offside call.

Minnesota broke the deadlock in the 80th minute from a left-footed shot by way of Robin Lod that cruised into the high center of the goal. The Loons created 11 chances and added two shots on target.

This match marked the second time the Sounders were shutout this season and its first loss of the season. Seattle’s MLS record of beginning a season unbeaten through 13 matches comes to an end but remains atop the Supporters’ Shield standings with 29 points.

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Injury woes and the international break

The Sounders earned their first loss of the season with seven players out due to injury and two out on international duty. This Sounders team has brighter days coming with tentative returns from the injury lay-offs and comebacks of Alex and Cristian Roldan.

Valuable time for the youth

This match saw Tacoma Defiance Striker Samuel Adeniran earn his MLS debut along with appearances from the young Josh Atencio and Ethan Dobbelaere. The youth play has been a major bright spot for the club this year.

Broldan international action

The Roldan brothers are currently 4-0 in Concacaf Gold Cup action. Although a much-needed rest might be in order following their return, their good international form may bring a spark to the team following this stretch of games.
