A 4-1 loss to Ghana on Thursday puts the U.S. out of the U-20 World Cup, but may mean Yedlin is eligible to play against DC United on Wednesday.

The U.S. U-20 National Team’s dream of advancing in the FIFA U-20 World Cup came to an end on Thursday morning as they fell to Ghana, 4-1, in the third and final match of the Group Stage.

Sounders FC right back DeAndre Yedlin played every minute of the first two matches, a 4-1 loss to Spain and a 1-1 draw with France, but had to be taken out of the final match of the Group Stage as a precautionary measure after taking a knock in the 54th minute. At that point, the U.S. trailed 1-0, but Ghana quickly pounced to add another goal, making it 2-0 in the 58th minute. Colorado Rapids defender Shane O’Neill scored in the 69th minute to give the U.S. hope at 2-1, but Ghana scored twice in five minutes to put the game out of reach.

Yedlin saw a rapid climb into the U.S. squad. He participated in camps with the team, but didn’t make his U-20 debut until playing in a 3-1 win over Portugal just before the U-20 World Cup.

The 19-year-old defender has played in 12 of Seattle’s 14 MLS matches, missing one for suspension and one to play in the international tournament in Turkey. He is expected to return to Seattle in time to be eligible for next Wednesday’s match at CenturyLink Field against D.C. United.
