Seattle Sounders forward and Designated Player Nelson Valdez has made Paraguay’s provisional roster for this summer’s Copa America Centenario.
The Paraguayan Football Federation released its list of 39 players on Friday, putting the 32-year-old Valdez in position to potentially appear in the fourth Copa America of his career. Final 23-man rosters for each country will be submitted by May 20.
Valdez has appeared for Paraguay in Copa America three times before, most recently in 2015. He scored one goal in five appearances for La Albirroja in Chile last year en route to Paraguay’s fourth-place finish.
Valdez also appeared in Copa America in 2011 in Argentina and in 2004 in Peru.
Paraguay will compete this summer in Group A along with the United States, Colombia and Costa Rica. Paraguay will face the U.S. on June 11 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The Panamanian Football Federation also announced on Friday that Sounders defender Roman Torres is among the 35 players on Panama’s provisional roster, though it’s highly unlikely Torres will play in the tournament.
Torres – who is still rehabbing a torn ACL suffered last summer with the Sounders – joined Los Canaleros as an honorary team captain for their two World Cup qualifying matches last month, but did not play.
U.S. Soccer and the other countries competing in this summer’s Copa America Centenario are expected to release their provisional rosters on Monday.
CenturyLink Field will host two games during the Copa America Centenario group stage and one in the quarterfinals. Haiti will take on Peru in Group B on June 4 (4:30 p.m. PT) and Argentina will face Bolivia in Group D on June 14 (7 p.m. PT) before Seattle hosts a crucial quarterfinal game between the winner of Group A and the runner-up in Group B on June 16 (6:30 p.m. PT).
